Social, Play & Group Skills

Play and Social skills are targeted through Natural Environment Teaching (NET) or Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and can include skills such as:

• functional play

• sustained independent or social play with peers

• turn taking and sharing

• imaginative play

• being able to assemble and build with toys

• engaging in cooperative structured play such as a game

Social skills can also include teaching skills related to executive functioning such as perspective taking, emotion regulation, time management or displaying flexibility/replacement behaviors.

This area also targets teaching school readiness skills such as being able to sit and participate in small groups like circle or story time, being able to raise their hand, answer questions related to the calendar, using art supplies or following receptive instructions.

For children who are fading services in preparation of a lesser restrictive environment or school, focus is given on conducting therapeutic activities in a 2:1 or 3:1 setting (child:therapist ratio) in order to work on independence and fading support to help your child be successful in the classroom.
